Complicated?! Garbage day in Japan
I often hear from foreigners who have lived in Japan, "The rules for taking out garbage in Japan are very complicated."
In Japan, it's necessary to separate and dispose of waste in a fairly detailed manner in order to reduce the amount of waste generated by recycling recyclable resources.
The main types of separation in Japan are as follows.
- burnable garbage(もえるごみ)
- unburnable garbage(もえないごみ)
- recyclable waste(しげんごみ)
- oversized garbage(そだいごみ)
Basically, they are classified as above. However, some local governments stipulate that Plastic bottles should be crushed before being thrown away, while others stipulate that Plastic bottles should not be crushed before being thrown away.
The fact that the rules differ slightly from region to region is another reason why people think that garbage disposal in Japan is difficult.
In addition, there are areas in Japan where garbage disposal bags are not specified, and there are areas where garbage disposal bags designated by local governments must be used before disposal.
As for taking out garbage in Japan, it's best to take it out in the morning of the day to prevent damage caused by crows and stray cats roughing up garbage.
Some people may think it's just taking out the garbage, but it actually happens a lot to get into trouble with neighbors for not following the rules.
It’s really important to follow the rules for garbage disposal in Japan.
